外望國金

Using Canon 40D. 1 Feb 2008. At home.

Accidentally walked into 2 IFC for a project, and then disappeared for two months. Finally it's done.

Using iPhone. 18 Jan 2008. From office.

Being labeled as "以金錢的奴隸自居". I can choose to 1) admit, 2) refute, 3) explain. I choose remaining silence and focus on living up this motto: 克己復禮

Free Parking

After so many friends linked me, I feel the need in creating this parking post to show that I am fully aware of all your supports.

Btw, I am not any kind of a deity. He is.

Manhattan

Farewell, King's Park Hill.

From Form 5 to Year 3, I have invited countless friends to enjoy its lovely little garden, to play with my cute little cat, and have a nice cup of coffee.

I have walked hundreds of times up and down the little hillside walk that leads to Yau Ma Tei MTR station. Its dense plantations always give me a feeling of tranquility. I even wrote a short fiction surrounding it.

But tomorrow I am moving out. To Manhattan Hill near Mei Foo (*hat tips to Jess).

Manhattan is a flat island. The only little hill is where the old observatory now stands in the middle of Central Park. Even the district Murray Hill, in Mid-town, is nothing about altitude.

And now we got a Manhattan Hill in Hong Kong. Glory to our developers.

So you are graduating, my friends

My graduating friends,

Just a short passage, hoping to remind you what you have learn during the last three years. And wish that the spirit and soul of universities, with its heritage from ancient Greece, will bring happiness to your life.

Ignorance

I wrote on last December why our leaders should embodies a broad range of knowledge. In corollary, why the amount of knowledge candidates embodies should be a factor in deciding who to vote.

Here is a recent example, by our Chief Executive Mr. Donald Tsang, during a radio interview.

"Host: I was struck by one phrase at the end of the policy address, towards the end of the conclusion, you say, we promote democratic development without compromising social stability or government efficiency, that kind of implies that democratic development does compromise social stability or government efficiency?

Donald Tsang: It can, it can, if we go to the extreme, people go to the extreme, and you have a cultural revolution, for instance, in China. When people take everything into their hands, then you cannot govern the place. And eh, the similar thing is...for instance...

Host: But Cultural Revolution wasn't really an extreme example of democracy.

Donald Tsang: What is it? People taking power into their own hands! Now, this is what it means by democracy, if you take it to the full swing. In other democracies, even if you have an elected person, then you overturn the policy in California, for instance, you have initiative number, number, number what, then you overturn policy taken by the government, that's not necessarily conducive to efficient government." (http://www.mpinews.com/htm/INews/20071012/gb52236a.htm)

MingPao wrote a nice commentary on the lack of knowledge of Tsang in modern Chinese history. My view is that he also lacks basic understanding of democracy, given that he is the head of the executive branch of the Hong Kong government.

In comparison with Regina Ip's previous statement "Hitler was also democratically elected", Tsang demonstrated his equal ignorance in Western democracy. By using these oversimplified and misleading examples of the downside of democracy, they wished to propagate anti-democracy ideas, and backfired.

As a beginning course in Western democracy, I would recommend them, and also my readers, to spend ten minutes reading these two articles on tyranny of the majority and Montesquieu.
